jewish-history1The Jewish History of Kingston Exhibit: From First Settlement to 1965 was planned as the Jewish Federation of Ulster County’s contribution to a year of special activities commemorating the 350th anniversary of the founding of Kingston, New York.  A Jewish History Project Committee was quickly formed.  The first step the committee took was to invite the Jewish community to provide information, family photographs, stories and whatever other memorabilia they were willing to share to include in the exhibit.  Several community members who grew up in Kingston and whose families had deep roots in the community were interviewed on camera, both for background information and for a video component to the exhibit.  The exhibit opened in November 2002 at the Downtown Heritage Area Visitors Center, and over the course of the winter attracted more visitors than any previous exhibit at the Visitors Center, with the exception of the Jewish Federation’s Holocaust exhibit the previous summer.
